The Threshold is an installation of sixty digital screens that looks at the fragile boundary between being present and being absent. I filmed 100 people from my own community. Each person was left alone with a camera and asked simply to be there, to exist without task or direction.
A full-length mirror stood to one side, an open door to the other. At first, many were acutely present for the camera, aware of being watched, presenting themselves to a future viewer. And then, something shifted. A gaze drifted toward the mirror, or the open door, or inward. Their body remained, but their attention moved elsewhere.
They were still there, yet in another sense, absent. It is that threshold that interests me, the point when someone stops existing for the gaze of another and begins existing only for themselves. The camera holds that moment without comment: the mind's drift away ,the quiet vanishing. Thresholds became an early articulation of a question that runs through my practice: how someone can be physically present yet psychologically elsewhere? It asks where presence actually resides.

Crackman and Robyn explores addiction through the recurring tension in my practice between presence and absence — the experience of being physically there while psychologically existing somewhere else.
Loosely drawn from memories of addiction, the film fictionalises lived experience rather than reconstructing it. Its characters move between moments of connection and disappearance, inhabiting a world in which addiction repeatedly pulls them away from themselves, from one another and from the reality immediately around them.
The film considers addiction as a state of continual transition: between being present and escaping, recognition and disconnection, being seen and becoming unreachable. The body remains, but the person can seem elsewhere.
As with much of my work, Crackman and Robyn asks what it means to be present — and how someone can remain physically before us while simultaneously disappearing.
