Cuts Everywhere

During my time in Miami i documented the young drag performers of the queer community and found myself getting more interested in creating performance wear for them. I would often design outfits from things i found hanging around the house like this mosquito sceen door material. I noticed that alot of the performers were struggling to make a living and they were performing for tiny amounts of money from the bars. It was incredible to see them so thankful to the bar owners for allowing them to perform for 20 or thirty bucks and some of them had spent 50/60 on their costume. Their art was running them into debt and the bar owners didnt care, they exploited them to the max. My idea was to inspire them to create from as little as possible. There was no way i could change the minds of the predatory establishments but i could try in a small way to show what was possible. I had made this outfit and loved the way it held its shape but didnt realise how much it would cut into me that evening. i think i had cuts for days after wearing this.
